Post-post indie
Yo, everyone!
I'm not really into indie music anymore. My indie friends are wrecks (except me because I'm allegedly awesome), music is old news (since Chris Brown beat up Rihanna, thus making mainstream more hardcore than our scene) and our clothes are couture (thanks to all sorts of designers our scene has nurtured).
I know I said indie is passe before, but this is post-post-indie. This is postmodern decadent prep. If you're wondering what postmodern decadent prep is, look at the following checklist:
- middle or upper-middle-class upbringing
- heard classic music in infancy
- could be classified as hipster at one point in adolescence/young adulthood
- well-educated
- can relate to at least one Vampire Weekend song
- wore Infamous Scarves at one point during adolescence or young adulthood
- obsessed about Nylon at some point (check above)
- dressed as oneself at one point (check above) as a reaction to the scene, not as a natural action born out of natural instincts to express oneself to an audience consisting of one's peers
- sometimes enjoys mainstream activities of music, but would never admit it
You people bore me. I got over pretenses when I was seventeen and I never looked back. What are you waiting for, kingdom come, whereupon Jesus will denounce you as liars and inauthentic culture hogs?
In the time since we have last communicated, I have:
- quit smoking
-admitted my mainstream likes and dislikes (go, Marie Claire; go to hell, Rihanna, despite what Chris Brown does to you)
- applied to university at last
- come to terms with my tween years
- kept up a serious relationship
- realised how good the XI Ministry of Sound Chillout Sessions cd is
- formed a band, which sounds like Morphine and Emilie Simon
There is no such thing as 2009 indie. Come to terms with that, and we shall talk.
Until then, I remain yours truly,
T. (petite fille post-post indie)
P.S.: Keep sending me songs, I always change my mind. And sorry, J, for not making it to the party!
